In this design, artist Alanda Calmus has painted the expression of what Scotland means to her. In part it expresses the beauty of the countryside and its iconic wildlife, the vibrancy of Scotland’s communities and the inclusivity of its people. It stands as a symbol of resilience. There’s a strength of spirit and an optimism that shines through even the darkest cloud.

As a realist painter for over 20 years, Alanda is known for her wildlife paintings, many of them hares. She has since moved on from this style of working, embracing a looser and more free-flowing art style.

The inclusion of animals in her art continues, but their energy and spirit is now of more importance. Through expressionistic displays of colour, she conveys her joy of the natural world.

Her acrylic paintings begin with intuitive mark-making. Details are then added using mixed-media to create form. This creative process makes each piece unique and full of character.
